FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Code Bar Code Readers selected by Intermountain Healthcare
Intermountain Implementing an Electronic Medication Administration
System
Draper, UT - April 4, 2007 - Code Corporation
announced today that Intermountain Healthcare has selected its Code
Reader line of bar code readers for Intermountain's new electronic
bedside medication administration and reporting system. Code products,
both in wireless and cabled configurations, will be implemented
throughout Intermountain's system of 21 hospitals in Utah and Idaho.
"We were happy to find a leading bar code manufacturer
in our own backyard," said Christina Carter, Director of Clinical Systems for Intermountain Healthcare. "As we worked on our unique requirements, Code delivered new features and performance
improvements very rapidly during the test and evaluation phase."
As a national leader in healthcare IT innovation, Intermountain
continues to look for technologically advanced solutions. In 2005, Intermountain
committed to enlist the best technology in validating the "five rights" practiced by all nurses when administering medication at bedside: right medication,
right patient, right dose, right time and right method of administration.
Using bar codes to speed retail sales is a proven technology,
but using bar codes in a medical setting is far more complex due to
the size and shape of the items carrying the codes. Code readers scan
tiny bar codes on medications, patient wristbands and clinician identification
badges. The bar code data is fed wirelessly into a software application
that performs a check against the five rights, prescriptions, and patient
records. After checking the program notifies the clinician of any problems
before the medicine is dispensed.
"Code has implemented bar code technology into
major hospitals from coast to coast, however, it has been extremely
strategic to our product development efforts to have a hospital in such
close proximity," said George Powell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Code Corporation. "We were able to collect first hand engineering data at Intermountain's hospitals
and create improvements in a matter of hours. We quickly and significantly
improved our products due to the close collaboration with Intermountain's
staff."
The use of bar codes, especially new, two-dimensional codes
to check medications is one of the fastest growing applications for
Code's technology leading products. "We have been impressed with Intermountain's ability to rapidly deploy new systems
into their facilities," said Powell. "Intermountain Healthcare recognizes the ways advanced bar code technology improves
patient safety. They efficiently and effectively implemented a process
to ensure patients received the best care possible in record time."
